Yet the Christmas story reveals something profound: God specializes in bringing breakthrough precisely when situations appear most hopeless.

When Everything Feels Uncertain
Consider the world into which Jesus was born. Rome dominated with an iron fist. Families lived under constant threat from soldiers who could burst into homes at any moment. A paranoid king ordered the execution of male children under two years old simply to protect his position of power. Sound familiar? The parallels to our current times are striking—governments making unsettling decisions, families being torn apart, threats to people's welfare, and rhetoric that dehumanizes those created in God's image.

Yet into this darkness, God sent light. Into this chaos, God brought hope. And he continues to do the same today.

The Story That Changes Everything
Matthew chapter one presents us with an extraordinary situation. Joseph, a righteous man, discovered his betrothed wife Mary was pregnant—and he knew the child wasn't his. According to the customs of the day, this constituted adultery, punishable by stoning. Joseph faced an agonizing decision: expose Mary publicly or quietly send her away.
In his moment of confusion and hurt, God intervened through a dream. An angel revealed that the child was conceived by the Holy Spirit, fulfilling the ancient prophecy from Isaiah 7:14 about a virgin bearing a son who would be called Immanuel—God with us.
This wasn't just about resolving Joseph's personal crisis. God was orchestrating something far greater, and he invited Joseph to partner with him in it.

God Still Gives a Word
The first reason we can have hope is simple yet powerful: God still speaks into our situations. Just as he gave Joseph a revelation that transformed his understanding, God continues to provide guidance and clarity when we're confused and hurting.
When circumstances make no sense, when promises seem impossible, when we can't see a way forward—God gives a word. His word brings understanding where there was confusion, peace where there was turmoil, and direction where there was uncertainty.
Scripture reminds us that God's word never returns void but accomplishes the purpose for which he sends it. He is higher than us, his thoughts transcend our thoughts, and his ways surpass our ways. Whatever word he has given you, hold onto it. His word is your hope, because God keeps his word.

Partnering With Something Greater
Joseph received more than just instruction—he received an invitation. God was doing something monumental, and Joseph got to be part of it. Despite the pain, despite the shame, despite not fully understanding, Joseph was chosen to participate in the most significant event in human history.

This truth applies to us today. Whatever turmoil you're experiencing, whatever pushback you're facing, it's bigger than just you. God is working his plan in your city, your workplace, your family, and even in the chaos of national and global events. And remarkably, he wants you involved.

Many would disqualify us based on our past, our fumbles, our failures. But God doesn't operate that way. He knows everything about us and still chooses us to partner with him. That should give us tremendous hope—we haven't been benched; we're still in the game.

God Changes Minds
Mary's hope came from watching God change Joseph's mind. Joseph had determined to quietly send her away, but one dream from God completely altered his course. He went through with the marriage, providing Mary with the protection and provision she desperately needed.

This reveals a crucial truth: God knows how to help people change their minds. That person who said no might come back with a yes. That door that closed might reopen. That relationship that seemed over might be restored. God specializes in changing hearts and minds.

Sometimes "no" just means "not now." Hold onto your hope. God is working behind the scenes, orchestrating circumstances and touching hearts in ways we cannot see.

The Promise of His Presence
The name Immanuel means "God with us"—God coming near. What a powerful promise in times of isolation and loneliness. When you feel abandoned, God comes near. When nobody picks up the phone, God comes near. When no one has the right words, God comes near with exactly what you need.

No government authority could stop him from fulfilling this promise. Herod tried and failed. God orchestrated a census to get Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem. He arranged for a cave when there was no room elsewhere. Nothing and no one can prevent God from coming near to his people.

God Can Do It Himself
Perhaps the most encouraging truth from this story is that God doesn't need cooperation to accomplish his purposes. When King Ahaz refused to ask for a sign in Isaiah 7, God said, "Fine, I'll create a sign myself"—and he did, through the virgin birth.

When people reject your witness, God can still work. When doors close, God can create new opportunities. When human help fails, God can provide supernaturally. He can do it all by himself.

Moving With Urgency
Joseph's response to God's word was immediate. He woke up and acted without delay. This challenges us: Is there something you haven't done because your hope isn't fully real yet? Is there an act of obedience you've delayed because you're unsure God will come through?

Whatever God has said to do, move with urgency. Don't schedule it for someday—do it today or tomorrow. You're partnered with God in bringing about a breakthrough.

The Ultimate Hope
The birth of Jesus was just the beginning. He was born to live a perfect life, to heal the sick, raise the dead, and teach with unmatched authority. But ultimately, he was born to die—to shed his blood for the forgiveness of sins. And three days later, he rose from the dead.

This is where true hope resides. If he died and rose again, he has enough power to turn any situation around. He can change minds, move obstacles, and transform the hardest hearts. He's alive today and coming back again.

Don't Give Up Now
Whatever you're facing—personally, as a family, as a community, or as a nation—don't give up. You're on the edge of breakthrough. Your answer is on the way. God is exposing what needs to be exposed and preparing what needs to be prepared.

The same God who came near in a manger, who changed Joseph's mind, who kept his promise to Mary, who orchestrated world events to fulfill prophecy—that same God is working in your situation right now. Hold onto hope. The breakthrough is coming.

Dig Deeper

Download the Devotional and Study Guide

Take the Next Step

Share
Post your insights or questions below.

When promises seem delayed and breakthrough feels distant, we're confronted with a choice: will we trust God's timing, or will we take matters into our own hands?

The truth is simple yet profound: waiting on God is not easy, but it is necessary.

Understanding What It Means to Wait
To wait on God means more than passive resignation. It means to look forward with anticipation, to expect with eagerness, to believe that God is actively working even when we cannot see it. Waiting is an active posture of faith that declares, "I know God is about to do something in my life."

Think about a child waiting for a store to open, pressed against the glass with excitement and anticipation. That's the kind of expectancy we should have when God has given us a promise. Not anxiety or doubt, but joyful confidence that what He has spoken will come to pass.

Here's a perspective that changes everything: waiting is not a punishment—it's preparation. God uses the waiting season to prepare our hearts for what He's about to give us. Sometimes we're not ready to receive what we're asking for. The delay isn't denial; it's development.

God Always Keeps His Promises
Throughout Scripture, we see an unbroken pattern: God keeps His promises. He told Abraham He would make him great—and He did. He told Moses to lead the people out of Egypt—and he did. God placed a rainbow in the sky as a promise that He would never flood the earth again—and He hasn't.

When God makes a promise, He always follows through. The question is never whether God will keep His word, but whether we will trust Him while we wait.

Many believers today have what could be called a "microwave mind"—we want instant results. We pray, and if God doesn't answer within our preferred timeframe, we move on to something else. But God doesn't operate on our schedule. If He's going to be God, He must be in control. And His timing is always perfect.

The wisdom of Proverbs 3:5-6 becomes essential here: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Lean not to your own understanding in all your ways, but acknowledge Him, and He will direct your path." God already knows the future He has for you. He knows the career, the breakthrough, the blessing. The only way we miss it is by leaning on our own understanding and blocking our own blessing.

Three Lessons from Abraham and Sarah
The story of Abraham and Sarah provides three powerful lessons about waiting for God's promise of breakthrough.

Lesson 1: Don't Get Ahead of God
God promised Abraham and Sarah a son. The promise was clear and direct. But Sarah was 89 years old, and in her mind, it seemed impossible. So she decided to help God along by giving her Egyptian servant Hagar to Abraham to produce an heir.

This decision to get ahead of God brought years of complications and heartache. Whenever we try to fix things ourselves or help God out, we create problems that wouldn't exist if we had simply waited.

Never count God out of your situation. He can always work miracles. He preserved Caleb so that at 80 years old, he had the body of a 45-year-old man. God can do the impossible—if we'll trust Him instead of manufacturing our own solutions.

Lesson 2: Don't Doubt God
When the Lord appeared to Abraham and declared that Sarah would have a son, Sarah overheard and laughed. The Lord called her out: "Sarah, you laughed." She denied it, but God sees all and hears all.

Her laughter revealed her unbelief. She had concluded that what she'd been waiting for would never happen.

Then came the penetrating question: "Is anything too hard for the Lord?"
The same God who raised Jesus from the dead can raise anything in your life. He protected three Hebrew boys in a fiery furnace. He shut the mouths of lions for Daniel. He parted the Red Sea. He made the sun stand still.

There is nothing—absolutely nothing—too hard for God.
Unbelief slows things down. It causes us to make decisions based on fear rather than faith. But when we keep believing, when we maintain confidence in God's word, we position ourselves to receive what He has promised.

Lesson 3: God is Worth Waiting For
The Lord told Abraham: "At the time appointed, I will return unto you according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son."

And in Genesis 21, we see the fulfillment. Abraham and Sarah received their promised son, Isaac—whose name means "laughter." What had been the laughter of doubt became the laughter of joy.

When God blesses you, it will truly be a blessing. His presence will be in it. His favor will rest upon it. And you'll look back and realize that the wait was worth it.

Practical Steps for the Waiting Season
If you're uncertain about God's promise for your life, ask Him. Jeremiah 33:3 says, "Call upon Me, and I will answer." God wants to reveal His plans to you. He has plans to give you a future and a hope, not to harm you.

Consider keeping a record of what God promises you. Write it down. Then, as He fulfills each promise, check it off and take time to thank Him. This practice serves two purposes: it helps you remember to be grateful, and it builds your faith as you see God's faithfulness over time.

The Breakthrough is Coming
Don't give up. Don't decide it's too late. Don't tell yourself it's not going to happen. God is preparing you even now for what He's about to release.

The breakthrough is coming. Hold on to your faith. Keep believing. Keep trusting. Because the God who keeps His promises is worth waiting for.

Every move God makes in a believer's life is a promotion with benefits. He knows when the time is right. All you have to do is trust Him and wait with expectant faith.

Waiting on God is worth the wait.

Dig Deeper

Download the Devotional and Study Guide

Take the Next Step

Share
Post your insights or questions below.

Pain whispers that we should stay quiet. Disappointment suggests we sit down. Betrayal convinces us that our voice doesn't matter. Yet in the midst of all that tries to silence us, there's a divine invitation echoing through our circumstances: Speak up, please.

## The Courage to Speak When Everything Says "Be Quiet"

The Apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthian church from a place of deep affliction. He wasn't writing from a mountaintop victory experience or a season of ease. He was writing from Macedonia, where he faced opposition from every direction—external threats from enemies and internal battles with his own fears. He'd been lied about, beaten, threatened, imprisoned, stoned and left for dead. People he trusted had abandoned him. Ministry partners had walked away, leaving him wondering who would be next to leave.

If anyone had earned the right to be silent, to retreat, to protect himself by saying nothing more, it was Paul. Yet in 2 Corinthians 4:13, he borrows words from Psalm 116: "Having the same spirit of faith as the Psalmist who wrote, 'I believe, therefore I spoke,' we also believe, therefore we also speak."

This is the heart of the matter. Belief demands expression. Faith refuses to be silent. When you truly believe something, it won't stay locked inside—it must come out.

## You're More Qualified Than You Think

One of the greatest lies we tell ourselves is that we're not qualified to speak. We look at our past mistakes, our lack of formal training, our age, or our circumstances and conclude that we have nothing worth saying. But here's the revolutionary truth: our adequacy doesn't come from ourselves. It comes from God.

Second Corinthians 3:5 makes this clear—God is the one who makes us sufficient. He didn't wait for us to clean ourselves up before saving us. He saved us when we couldn't save ourselves. That same God who qualified us for salvation has qualified us to speak about what He's done--especially for us.

You may not be able to articulate everything perfectly. You might not have a theology degree or decades of life experience. But you can say, "I know I'm saved." Nobody can take that from you. And that simple testimony—"I know I'm saved"—is powerful enough to change someone's life.

Even more remarkably, God hasn't just qualified us individually. He's qualified us collectively. As the body of Christ, we've been selected and appointed as servants of a new covenant—not a covenant of death through the law, but a covenant of life through grace. We're ambassadors carrying a message of reconciliation, offering people the opportunity to join God's family through faith in Jesus Christ.

## The Power of Hope in Dark Times

What keeps us speaking when everything around us is falling apart? Hope. Not wishful thinking or positive vibes, but the solid, unshakeable hope that God who raised Jesus from the dead will also raise us up.

This hope changes everything. It means that however bad things get, there's a better day coming. It means that whatever leadership we live under, whatever chaos surrounds us, there's a God who rules, super-rules, and overrules. This hope is built on nothing less than Jesus' blood and righteousness.

When you have this kind of hope—what Peter calls a "living hope"—you don't just speak. You speak with boldness. You speak with courage. You speak even when threatened, even when mocked, even when it costs you something.

## Living It AND Saying It

There's a popular sentiment in Christian circles: "Let your life do the talking." And yes, we absolutely should live in a way that reflects Christ. Our actions matter. Jesus said to let our light shine so people can see our good works and glorify our Father in heaven.

But here's what we often miss: it's not just about living it. It's also about saying it.

Romans 10 lays out the logic clearly: "How can they call on Him whom they have not believed? And how can they believe in Him whom they have not heard?" Faith comes by hearing, and hearing comes through the word of God. Someone has to speak up so others can hear.

In our digital age, this has never been easier. A text message. A social media post. A conversation over coffee. A reel or tweet. You can put truth on someone's timeline, in their inbox, on their mind. You can make them hear what they need to hear, even if they weren't looking for it.

## Broken Vessels and Shining Light

Here's where it gets beautiful and painful at the same time. Second Corinthians 4:6-7 tells us that God has shined His light in our hearts, giving us the knowledge of His glory in the face of Christ. But we carry this treasure in earthen vessels—fragile clay jars that crack and break.

Think about a clay jar. When it's whole, you can't see what's inside. But when it cracks, when it breaks, the contents spill out. The light inside becomes visible through the cracks.

This is what our affliction does. Our pain, our persecution, our struggles—they're the cracks that allow others to see what's on the inside. When people watch you go through grief and still praise God, they see the treasure. When they watch you face abandonment and keep believing, the light shines through. When they see you knocked down but not destroyed, they witness the glory of God breaking through your brokenness.

The greater the pain, the greater the glory that can shine through.

There's a story from the early church about a bishop sentenced to be burned at the stake for refusing to deny Christ. The night before his execution, church members visited him, saying, "We don't know if we can make it like you're making it. We don't know if we can keep speaking up knowing fire awaits us."

The bishop responded, "God will let you know that you can bear the fire."

The next day, as flames consumed him, just when the crowd thought he was dead, the bishop lifted his hands. The crowd erupted in praise. He let them know the fire was bearable.

## The Resurrection Power Within You

The final reason we can speak up is the most powerful: we have resurrection power. The same power that raised Jesus from the dead lives in us. That means death itself can't stop us. Nothing can ultimately silence us.

When you're beat down, God will raise you up. When doors close, God will raise you up. When opportunities are denied, God will raise you up. And one day, when you face your own death, that same power will raise you from the grave.

## Your Turn to Speak

So what's trying to silence you today? What pain, what fear, what past failure is keeping your mouth shut? What disappointment has convinced you to sit down?

Remember your adequacy comes from God. Remember you've been selected for this moment. Remember the hope you carry. Remember the resurrection power within you.

Then speak up, please. Make sure they can hear you. Make sure it's clear.

Because someone needs to know how to be saved. Someone needs to know they can come back. Someone needs to hear that it's survivable, that they can make it, that they can finish.

Don't let affliction silence you. Let it crack you open so the glory can shine through.

Speak up, please!

Dig Deeper

Download the Devotional and Study Guide

Take the Next Step

Share
Post your insights or questions below.

He acts miraculously in bringing them out of foreign nations. He even provides water and bread for them in the wilderness.

However, the nation of Israel grew disobedient, and distant from God and His law. They ended up turning away from God, and part of the reason was because they failed to remember.

They failed to remember the great acts of deliverance God did for them. They failed to remember the miracles that He performed in their midst. They failed to remember that He's good and present and loving towards them.

But thankfully, there were also people throughout Scripture who developed a spiritual habit of remembering God’s work from the past. When times became difficult, or when things seemed dark, they took the time to remember how God had previously acted toward them.

The writer of Psalm 9 was one of them. The Psalmist begins this song by doing two things...

First, the writer gives thanks to God, and expresses gratefulness for God.

Second, the writer recounts God’s wonderful deeds. Recounting these deeds from the past helped the Israelites remember His faithfulness and goodness toward them even in difficult times.

And the same is true for us.

We are commanded many times in God’s Word to remember what God has done, because remembering what God has done fuels our hope for what He will do.

So take some time today to remember what God has done for you. Think about a season of your life where you knew God’s goodness and love. Tell Him how grateful you are for His goodness and love in your life. Begin to let those memories of God’s love shape your hope for the future.

Just when we think we're making progress, distractions arise, doubts creep in, and obstacles appear seemingly out of nowhere. Yet throughout Scripture, we find a consistent message: breakthrough comes to those who stay focused by faith.

The journey toward breakthrough isn't a single moment—it's a process that requires multiple ingredients working together. Think of it like baking bread. You need flour, water, yeast, and salt. Leave out any ingredient, and you won't get the result you're hoping for. Similarly, receiving God's breakthrough in our lives requires belief, prayer, commitment, endurance, and focus.

## The Foundation: Faith That Sees Beyond

Hebrews 11:1 reminds us that "faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen." Another way to understand this: faith shows the reality of what is hoped for—it's the evidence of things we cannot yet see with our physical eyes.

Faith acts like a thing is already accomplished, even when it's not yet visible, so that it might actually come to pass. This isn't wishful thinking or positive psychology. This is spiritual sight—the ability to see what God has promised before it manifests in the natural realm.

Here's a powerful way to think about it: Faith gets you in the door. Trust keeps you in the door. And waiting allows you to receive your breakthrough.

Without faith, it's impossible to please God. Those who come to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him (Hebrews 11:6). The question isn't whether God wants to bless us—the question is whether we're willing to believe, pray, commit, endure, and stay focused enough to receive what He's offering.

## The Blind Beggar's Blueprint

The story of the blind beggar in Luke 18:35-43 provides a masterclass in staying focused by faith. As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind man sat by the roadside, begging for survival. When he heard the commotion of a crowd passing by, he asked what was happening.

The response changed everything: "Jesus of Nazareth is passing by."

While the crowd knew Jesus merely as a man from Nazareth, the blind beggar—despite his physical blindness—possessed spiritual sight. He cried out, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!"

Notice the title he used. Not "Jesus of Nazareth," but "Son of David"—a messianic title acknowledging Jesus as the promised Savior. This man couldn't see with his eyes, but he could hear. He had listened to stories about Jesus healing the sick, giving sight to the blind, and raising the dead. And he believed.

### Lesson One: Know What You Believe

The blind beggar's spiritual clarity stands in stark contrast to the physically sighted crowd who didn't truly know who Jesus was. This raises an important question for us: Do we really know Him?

The journey we're on is fundamentally about getting to know Jesus more deeply. God allows various trials and situations in our lives not to harm us, but so we can discover more about who He is and how He operates. Every experience you've had has been leading you toward knowing something more about Jesus.

### Lesson Two: Don't Let Anyone Stop You

When the blind man cried out to Jesus, the crowd sternly told him to be quiet. They saw him as a nuisance, an unimportant beggar interrupting an important man's journey. But the text says he "kept crying out all the more."

The louder they tried to silence him, the louder he became.

This is crucial: Satan will try to keep you from getting what God has for you. Sometimes he'll use well-meaning people—even people you love and respect—to plant doubts or discourage your pursuit. But you cannot let anyone stop you from getting your breakthrough.

The blind beggar had only one weapon: his voice. He couldn't see to navigate through the crowd. He couldn't physically push his way forward. But he could speak, and he used his voice with determination and faith.

His persistence paid off. Jesus stopped and commanded that the man be brought to Him.

### Lesson Three: Know What You Want

When the blind man stood before Jesus, the Lord asked him a simple but profound question: "What do you want me to do for you?"

Jesus already knew what the man needed, but He wanted him to articulate it by faith. Sometimes God just wants us to say it out loud. To declare with our mouths what we're believing for in our hearts.

The blind beggar was crystal clear: "Lord, I want to regain my sight."

He didn't ask for money, though he was poor. He didn't ask for food, though he was hungry. He asked for the one thing that would transform his entire life—the restoration of his sight.

Jesus responded, "Receive your sight; your faith has made you well."

Immediately the man could see, and he followed Jesus, praising and glorifying God. When the people saw what had happened, they too began praising God.

## Your Breakthrough Is Personal—And Public

Here's something beautiful about breakthrough: it's not just for you. When God blesses you, heals you, provides for you, or opens doors for you, it becomes a testimony that encourages others and brings glory to His name.

The blind beggar couldn't stop talking about what Jesus had done for him. He walked through Jerusalem with joy, telling everyone about his miracle. We should have that same excitement when God moves in our lives.

Too often, believers have been silenced—by culture, by critics, by fear of what others might think. But when you receive your breakthrough, don't be quiet about it. Someone needs to hear that God is still in the miracle-working business.

## The P-U-S-H Principle

The blind beggar demonstrates what it means to P-U-S-H: Pray Until Something Happens.

He didn't pray once and give up. He cried out repeatedly: "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" When opposition came, he cried out even more. When people told him to be quiet, he got louder.

When you want something desperately—when you know you need God's intervention—it's not only acceptable but necessary to pray persistently. "Lord, I need help. I need You right now." Over and over, if that's what it takes.

## Stay Focused: Your Breakthrough Is Coming

The message is clear: God is offering breakthrough, but we must stay focused to receive it.

There will always be distractions trying to pull you away. There will be voices telling you to give up, that it's not worth it, that you're bothering God with your requests. There will be circumstances that tempt you to lose faith.

But like the blind beggar, you must remain determined. You must refuse to let anything—or anyone—stop you from getting to Jesus. You must know what you want and be willing to declare it by faith. You must believe that He is who He says He is and that He rewards those who diligently seek Him.

Your breakthrough is on the way. Can you see it coming? By faith, start thanking God now for what He's about to do. Don't wait until you see it with your physical eyes—see it with spiritual eyes and begin praising Him in advance.

Greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world. No weapon formed against you will prosper. You are not alone—God is with you every single day, and He will never leave you.

Stand focused by faith. Your breakthrough is coming.

Dig Deeper

Download the Devotional and Study Guide

Take the Next Step

Share
Post your insights or questions below.

We start diets we don't complete, exercise routines that fade after a few weeks, and goals that remain perpetually on our "someday" list. This struggle with finishing what we start isn't just about willpower—it's often about understanding our divine assignment and committing to see it through, regardless of the obstacles.

The Christian life is fundamentally about finishing. Not just beginning with enthusiasm, but crossing the finish line with determination and faith. This isn't merely about personal achievement; it's about fulfilling the specific purpose God has designed for each of us.

The Cloud of Witnesses

Hebrews 12:1 reminds us that we are "surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses." These aren't passive spectators—they're examples of people who fought the good fight and finished their race by faith. From Abraham, who left idol worship behind, to Moses, who carried the weight of his past mistakes, to Mary, who endured shame and insult—each one completed their divine assignment despite overwhelming challenges.

These witnesses prove something vital: God doesn't choose perfect people. He chooses willing people. He knew everything about them before He called them, just as He knows everything about us. Their imperfections didn't disqualify them; their faith propelled them forward.

The beauty of this truth is that we have both biblical and personal examples. We've witnessed people in our own lives who have kept the faith, walked the narrow path, and chose to live for Jesus despite circumstances that could have derailed them. Their testimonies aren't just inspiring stories—they're proof that finishing is possible.

Laying Aside the Weights

The second part of Hebrews 12:1 contains a crucial instruction: "Let us lay aside every weight and the sin which doth so easily beset us." This imagery is powerful. Athletes who want to run fast don't carry unnecessary baggage. They strip down to essentials, removing anything that might slow their pace.

What are the weights in your life? They're not necessarily bad things—they're simply things that hinder your forward momentum. Maybe it's bitterness that keeps you looking backward instead of forward. Perhaps it's resentment that drains your emotional energy. It could be anger that clouds your judgment or distractions that pull your focus away from your divine assignment.

The Holy Spirit is willing to reveal these weights if we ask. He doesn't want interference any more than we should. He wants us running free, unencumbered by anything that prevents us from becoming who God created us to be.

Then there's sin—the things we know we shouldn't be doing. Sometimes we're aware of these patterns; other times, we need divine revelation to recognize them. The goal isn't shame but freedom. Sin doesn't just offend God; it hinders our effectiveness and blocks our prayers. As 1 Peter 3:7 indicates, even something as seemingly small as harsh words to a spouse can create a barrier between us and God.

Looking to Jesus

Hebrews 12:2-3 directs our attention to the ultimate example: "Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God."

Jesus had joy set before Him—and that joy was us. While we were yet sinners, Christ died. He endured torture, abuse, and unimaginable suffering because He had you and me in mind. His willingness to finish His assignment, despite the cost, should inspire us to finish ours.

All He asks in return is that we live lives that reflect Him to others. Is that too much to ask when He's already secured our eternity? Our goal should be simple: carry as many people with us to heaven as possible.

The Hard Cases

Not every assignment is easy. Sometimes God places challenging people in our path—individuals who resist the gospel, who push back against truth, who seem impossible to reach. These assignments test our commitment and strengthen our faith.

Consider the case where the Pastor shared with a person who took seven years to accept Christ. Seven years of persistence, prayer, and patient witness. That's not a failure of evangelism—that's faithfulness in action. And often, while we think we're helping someone else, God is using that very situation to strengthen us, to deepen our knowledge of Scripture, and to develop our character.

The hard cases aren't mistakes. God already knows who will be saved. He places them in our path for mutual benefit—their salvation and our sanctification.

The Danger of Distraction

One of the enemy's most effective tactics isn't direct opposition—it's distraction. Like a runner who looks back at competitors instead of focusing on the finish line, we can lose our race by taking our eyes off the goal.

Samson accomplished God's purposes but never enjoyed them because he never built a relationship with God. Jonah completed his assignment but missed the blessing because he did it grudgingly. Both finished, but neither experienced the joy that comes from willing obedience.

We can do what God asks without truly engaging with Him, and in doing so, we forfeit the blessing. The goal isn't just completion—it's joyful participation in God's work.

Your Divine Assignment

Every born-again believer has been chosen for a purpose. Jeremiah 1:5 reminds us that God knew us before we were formed, and Jeremiah 29:11 assures us He has plans to give us hope and a future. You're not an accident, and your assignment isn't random.

There's somebody who needs to hear what you have to say. There's a situation that requires your specific gifts and experiences. God has strategically positioned you for kingdom impact.

The question isn't whether you're capable—if God called you, you're equipped. The question is whether you'll choose by faith to finish the race.

The Finish Line

Paul's declaration in 2 Timothy 4:7-8 should be every believer's goal: "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness."

That crown isn't earned in heaven—it's earned here through faithful service. And it's available not just to Paul, but to all who fight the good fight.

Don't let anyone else do your assignment. Don't allow distractions to derail your purpose. Don't permit weights and sins to slow your pace. Choose today, by faith, to finish the race God has set before you. He believes in you—now it's time to believe in yourself and in the One who called you.

The finish line awaits, and with it, the words every believer longs to hear: "Well done, good and faithful servant."

Dig Deeper

Download the Devotional and Study Guide

Take the Next Step

Share
Post your insights or questions below.

We settle into seasons of peace and prosperity, convinced that our own efforts produced them. We take credit for the calm, pride ourselves on the stability, and forget the source of every good thing in our lives. But what happens when that peace is threatened? What do we do when the breakthrough we've been experiencing suddenly feels vulnerable?

The story of King Joash offers us a sobering mirror to examine our own hearts and a powerful blueprint for protecting what God has given us.

## The Wicked King Who Knew the Truth

Joash was not a good king. He followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, leading Israel into idolatry and rebellion against God. He knew the rules of proper worship but chose to build altars to false gods. He understood God's commands but deliberately disobeyed them. By every measure, he was a wicked ruler.

Yet during his reign, Israel experienced peace. An unnamed deliverer had freed them from Syrian oppression, and the people lived securely—so securely they could dwell in tents outside the city walls without fear. It was a time of unprecedented safety and prosperity.

Then Joash received troubling news: Elisha, the prophet of God, was dying.

The king rushed to Elisha's bedside and wept over him, crying out, "My father, my father, the chariots of Israel and its horsemen!" In that moment, this wicked king revealed something profound about himself—and about us.

## The Illusion of Self-Sufficiency

Joash's tears weren't primarily about losing a spiritual father or grieving the death of a holy man. He was crying because his access to God's help was slipping away. He had been living under the umbrella of divine protection without truly surrendering to the God who provided it.

How many of us do the same thing?

We rely on the church but not on Christ. We depend on the paycheck but not on the Provider. We trust the friend, the family member, the institution—but we don't fully trust God Himself. We mistake the channel of blessing for the source of blessing.

The peace in your life right now—however imperfect it may be—didn't originate with you. That stability in your marriage, that breakthrough in your finances, that healing in your body, that restoration in your relationships—none of it came from your own strength. God is the producer of peace, the Prince of Peace, the keeper and supervisor of all that is good in your life.

If God doesn't maintain it, it won't last.

## The God Who Holds On When We Let Go

Here's where the story takes a remarkable turn. Despite Joash's wickedness, despite his insincere motives, despite his rebellious heart, Elisha still reached out and placed his hands on the king's hands.

Think about that image for a moment.

A holy prophet touching a wicked king. A man of God guiding someone who had spent his entire reign defying God. Why would God extend such grace?

Because God had made promises to Abraham. He had made promises to David. And God keeps His word—not because we deserve it, but because He is faithful to His covenant.

Perhaps you're alive today not because of your own righteousness, but because someone prayed for you. A grandmother who interceded before you were born. A parent who cried out to God during your darkest season. A friend who never stopped believing God could reach you.

God is still answering prayers for you that were prayed years ago by people who may no longer be here. Their voices are silent, but their prayers are still echoing in heaven, and God is still responding.

That's the kind of God we serve—one who holds onto us even when we're trying to pull away.

## The Arrow of Victory

Elisha instructed Joash to take a bow and arrow, then placed his own hands over the king's hands. "Open the window toward the east," he commanded. That was the direction of Syria, Israel's constant enemy.

"Shoot."

The king released the arrow.

"The Lord's arrow of victory," Elisha declared. "The arrow of victory over Aram. You will defeat the Arameans at Aphek until you have destroyed them."

This wasn't just about military strategy. This was about declaring war on what had been stealing Israel's peace. And here's the crucial insight: God doesn't only have a recovery plan; He has an offensive plan.

We often approach God reactively, crying out for help only when we're already in trouble. But sometimes God wants us to take the initiative. He wants us to declare war on the patterns, the habits, the relationships, the strongholds that keep attacking what He's trying to build in our lives.

Declare war on the unforgiveness that keeps destroying your relationships. Declare war on the fear that keeps you from stepping into your calling. Declare war on the complacency that's slowly eroding your faith.

But here's the promise: it's a war that's already been won. The arrow is the Lord's arrow of victory. He will guide it. Just as He guided David's stone to Goliath's forehead, He will guide your obedience to its target.

## The Tragedy of "Good Enough"

Then Elisha gave another instruction: "Take the arrows and strike the ground."

Joash struck the ground three times and stopped.

Elisha became angry. "You should have struck five or six times! Then you would have struck Aram until you destroyed it. But now you will strike Aram only three times."

Why was the prophet upset? Because Joash had decided on his own that three times was enough. He didn't ask how many times he should strike. He didn't seek guidance. He just determined in his own mind that he'd done sufficient.

This is where many of us lose our breakthrough.

We pray three times and decide that's enough. We forgive once and think we're done. We serve for a season and feel we've paid our dues. We give what's comfortable and assume we've been generous.

But who told us it was enough? Did God say stop, or did we just decide we were finished?

Complete victory requires complete obedience. Total breakthrough demands total surrender. We can't set the terms and expect God's full blessing.

If you're still fighting the same battles, maybe it's because you stopped striking too soon. If your relationships keep falling into the same patterns, perhaps you haven't fully submitted to God's process. If your church isn't experiencing the growth it should, maybe the congregation decided "good enough" was actually good enough.

## How We Fight Today

We're not ancient warriors with bows and arrows, so how do we fight for our breakthrough in practical terms?

**We fight through prayer.** Organized, fervent, consistent prayer moves the hand of God. When Elijah prayed, God blinded an entire army. When the church prayed, Peter was released from prison. Prayer isn't our last resort—it's our first line of defense.

**We fight through practical obedience.** When we do what God says, we move ourselves out of the path of His judgment and put our enemies in the line of fire. Vengeance belongs to the Lord, but obedience positions us to watch Him work on our behalf.

**We fight through praise.** Something supernatural happens when we praise God in the midst of battle. Paul and Silas praised in prison, and chains fell off. Joshua's army shouted praise, and walls came down. Jehoshaphat sent the choir to the front lines, and the enemy destroyed itself.

Praise reminds us that God is bigger than our problems. It magnifies Him and minimizes our challenges. It's a weapon the enemy cannot withstand.

## The Victory Is Already Won

On a hill far away, Jesus fought the ultimate battle. On the cross, He prayed for His enemies. He practiced obedience to the Father. He offered praise even in His suffering.

They killed Him, but death couldn't hold Him.

Three days later, He rose victorious, proving that the battle was already won before we ever entered it.

We don't fight hoping to win. We fight knowing we've already won. The victory is promised. The outcome is secured. Our job is simply to keep striking the ground until God says it's enough.

So pick up your weapons—prayer, obedience, and praise. Declare war on whatever is threatening your breakthrough. And don't stop until God gives you complete victory.

Just when we sense momentum building, just when the door begins to crack open, just when we can almost taste the breakthrough—something happens. The floor falls out from under us. The opportunity slips through our fingers. The promise seems to evaporate into thin air.

If you've experienced this pattern, you're not alone. It's a spiritual reality as old as the early church itself.

## When Breakthrough Meets Opposition

The book of Acts chronicles a pivotal moment in church history. The gospel was spreading beyond its Jewish origins, doors were opening to the Gentiles, and a community in Antioch was thriving so authentically that observers coined a new term for them: Christians. They were so Christ-like in their love, generosity, and brotherhood that the name simply fit.

But breakthrough often attracts opposition.

King Herod Agrippa, seeking political favor with Jewish leaders, launched an attack on this growing movement. He executed James, the brother of John, with the sword. When he saw this pleased certain factions, he arrested Peter with plans to do the same after the Passover festival concluded.

Peter sat in prison, chained between soldiers, guarded by four squads rotating in shifts. Herod wasn't taking chances—Peter had escaped custody before, and this time the king wanted to ensure his execution would proceed as planned.

The situation looked hopeless. One leader already dead. Another awaiting execution. The church under attack from political powers. Sound familiar?

Yet Acts 12:5 offers a simple but profound statement: "So Peter was kept in prison, but prayer for him was being made fervently by the church to God."

## The Weapon of Organized Prayer

While Peter sat in chains, the church didn't organize a protest. They didn't strategize political maneuvers or plan a rescue operation. They organized to pray.

This wasn't casual prayer. This wasn't "thoughts and prayers" offered as a social courtesy. This was the ecclesia—the organized gathering of believers—coming together with unified purpose and fervent hearts.

The word "fervent" in the original Greek means to stretch out, like reaching with every ounce of strength to grasp something just beyond your fingertips. It's the kind of prayer that extends itself fully, doing everything humanly possible to connect with God's power.

Think of a child stretching with all their might to reach something valuable just out of reach. Every muscle engaged. Every bit of focus concentrated on the goal. That's fervent prayer.

For seven days—the length of the Passover festival—the church prayed. Seven days of stretching out to God on Peter's behalf. And when their prayers couldn't bridge the gap completely, God covered the distance they couldn't reach.

## When God Covers the Gap

The night before Herod planned to bring Peter out for execution, an angel appeared in the cell. The chains fell off. The guards didn't wake. The iron gate opened by itself. Peter walked out of prison into freedom, initially thinking he was dreaming.

He made his way to the house where believers were gathered in prayer—still praying for his release even at that late hour. When he knocked, a servant girl named Rhoda recognized his voice but was so shocked she forgot to open the door. She ran to tell the others, "Peter is at the door!"

They didn't believe her. "You're out of your mind," they said. "It must be his angel."

But Peter kept knocking, and when they finally opened the door, there he stood—the answered prayer in flesh and blood.

The church had prayed with everything they had. God did what only He could do.

## Four Marks of Fervent Prayer

What does it look like to pray fervently in our own lives? Four characteristics emerge from this account:

**Constant Prayer**: The church prayed for seven straight days. While we may not be able to lock ourselves away for a week-long prayer meeting, we can maintain a posture of ongoing conversation with God about the breakthrough we're seeking to protect.

**Concentrated Prayer**: They focused. In our distraction-filled world, fervent prayer requires intentionally setting aside interruptions. Put the phone away. Turn off notifications. Create space for concentrated communion with God.

**Convicted Prayer**: The text says they "prayed to God"—not to the universe, not to fate, not hoping things would just work out. They prayed with conviction that the God who created heaven and earth could intervene in their situation (Hebrews 11:6).

**Consistent Prayer**: Morning, noon, and night. Before meals, after work, during breaks. Consistency builds spiritual momentum. "Lord, remember what we talked about yesterday? I'm still asking."

## The Invisible Battle

What we often don't see is the spiritual warfare happening in response to our prayers. The book of Daniel reveals that when Daniel prayed, God heard and responded immediately—but spiritual opposition delayed the answer for 21 days. God sent the angel Michael to fight the battle so Gabriel could deliver the message.

Our prayers set divine forces in motion. When we pray according to God's will, nothing can ultimately stop the answer from reaching us. Not political powers. Not spiritual opposition. Not human schemes.

Herod thought he had won when he executed James. He thought he had secured his position by imprisoning Peter. But God moved him out of the way. Shortly after Peter's miraculous release, Herod accepted worship that belonged only to God. He was struck with a painful illness and died within days.

God's purposes will prevail. History is, after all, His story.

## Why Some Prayers Look Different

The hard question remains: Why was James executed while Peter was rescued? Why do some prayers result in miraculous deliverance while others end in loss?

The mystery of God's sovereignty doesn't always provide neat answers. But we know this: James fulfilled his calling. Jesus had told His disciples they would be His "witnesses"—a word that means "martyrs." James was simply the first to complete that particular assignment, bringing glory to God even in death.

For believers, death isn't goodbye. It's "see you later." The promise of resurrection means that every saint who has gone before is part of an innumerable company we'll one day join.

## Protecting What God Has Promised

Whatever breakthrough you're experiencing or anticipating—an open door, a new opportunity, healing, restoration, provision—it needs protection. The enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy. He doesn't want you walking in the fullness of what God has promised.

A weapon for protecting your breakthrough is fervent, organized, persistent prayer--even corporate prayer.

Don't let pride keep you from asking others to pray with you. Don't let discouragement cause you to give up before the answer arrives. Don't let distraction pull you away from concentrated communion with God.

Stretch out in your prayers. Do everything you can. And watch God cover the gap you cannot bridge.

The breakthrough you're holding isn't just for you—it's meant to flow through you to bless others. Protect it through prayer, even corporate prayer, and watch God's purposes unfold in ways you never imagined possible.

The daily grind, unexpected challenges, and persistent obstacles can leave us wondering if things will ever change. Yet there's a profound truth that echoes through the corridors of faith: God still gives breakthroughs. Not just small victories, but transformative, life-altering breakthroughs that shift everything.

The question isn't whether God can provide a breakthrough—it's whether we're positioned to receive it.

## The Foundation: Commit Your Ways to the Lord

Psalm 37:5 offers a powerful directive: "Commit your ways to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass." This isn't a passive suggestion—it's an active call to decision-making that precedes blessing.

Commitment means more than Sunday attendance or occasional Bible reading. It's about surrendering every room of your life to God's inspection and authority. Many of us have a tendency to invite God into most areas while keeping certain rooms locked. We think, "Lord, this one space—let me just keep it to myself." But genuine commitment requires opening every door.

Consider this striking illustration: Four masked men with assault rifles burst into a church service, demanding that anyone who would deny their faith leave immediately. As people slowly stood and walked out in fear, those who remained sat crying, praying, looking at the cross—unable to leave despite the threat. Finally, the masked men removed their disguises and told the preacher, "Now you can preach to the committed ones."

That's what God is looking for—people who won't walk away when faith costs something.

True commitment means releasing your entire life path into God's hands. It means being willing to do whatever He asks, even when it doesn't make sense to your natural mind. And here's the beautiful truth: if you've been born again, He deserves that commitment. He died on the cross for your sins. You took the deal—eternal life in exchange for surrendering control. As 1 Corinthians 6 reminds us, our bodies no longer belong to us; they belong to Him.

## The Challenge: Trust Also in Him

The second decision required for breakthrough is trust. This isn't blind optimism or wishful thinking—it's confident reliance on God's character and promises.

Your entire journey since accepting Christ has been about learning to trust God. Every trial, every uncertainty, every seemingly impossible situation has been a classroom where faith is refined. God has been teaching you that He can be trusted, that His promises are reliable, that He shows up when you need Him most.

Trusting God involves taking risks—at least, that's how it feels to our limited human perspective. Abraham took a risk when he left everything familiar to go to a place he'd never seen. Noah took a risk building an ark when it had never rained. Gideon took a risk facing 120,000 soldiers with only 300 men. David took a risk confronting a nine-foot giant with nothing but a slingshot.

Esther took perhaps one of history's greatest risks when she approached the king uninvited, knowing it could cost her life. "If I perish, let me perish," she declared. But God was in it, and He saved her people.

Peter took a risk stepping out of the boat onto water. As long as he kept his eyes on Jesus, he walked on the impossible. But the moment he focused on his circumstances—the wind, the waves, the sheer impossibility of what he was doing—he began to sink.

That's often our problem. We take our eyes off Jesus and start drowning in our circumstances. We look at our bank account, our health reports, our relationship status, our career obstacles, and we forget who's walking with us. We forget that if God can get us into a situation, He can certainly get us out of it.

Mary, the mother of Jesus, took an extraordinary risk. In a culture where pregnancy outside marriage meant death by stoning, she said yes to God's plan. She couldn't fully explain it, but she trusted the One who called her.

Twenty-nine years ago, a man heard God tell him to leave his secure job in education—with 23 years invested—and start a church. He had only three hundred dollars to his name. But he obeyed. He took the risk. And decades later, the work continues because God was faithful.

The more you take risks in obedience to God, the more you discover that they aren't really risks at all. They're opportunities to watch God demonstrate His faithfulness.

## The Promise: He Shall Bring It to Pass

Here's where faith transforms into reality. After commitment and trust comes God's promise: "He shall bring it to pass."

This isn't wishful thinking. This is the guaranteed outcome when you align yourself with God's will. He's not in the business of wasting words or making empty promises. What He says, He does.

The Bible contains over 600 promises, each one a potential anchor for your soul:

- **His Presence**: "I will never leave you nor forsake you" (Hebrews 13:5)
- **His Protection**: "I am your shield" (Genesis 15:1)
- **His Power**: "I will strengthen you" (Isaiah 41:10)
- **His Provision**: "I will help you" (Isaiah 41:10)
- **His Direction**: "In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths" (Proverbs 3:5-6)
- **His Purpose**: "I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope" (Jeremiah 29:11)

God has a plan already laid out for your life. The only way you miss it is by insisting on your own plan instead.

## Patience and Timing

Perhaps the hardest part of waiting for breakthrough is understanding God's timing. The old saying goes, "He may not come when you want Him, but He's always on time." This isn't just religious cliché—it's profound truth.

God is working behind the scenes, arranging circumstances, dealing with people's hearts, positioning resources, and preparing you for what He's about to give you. Your limited perspective can only see what's directly in front of you. But God sees the entire landscape—past, present, and future—and He knows exactly when everything needs to come together.

Patience doesn't mean passivity. It means actively trusting while you wait, continuing to obey, continuing to believe, continuing to position yourself for the blessing even when you can't yet see it.

## Learning to Give

One of the most counterintuitive principles of breakthrough is this: you must become a giver, not just a receiver.

Luke 6:38 promises, "Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you."

God wants to teach us generosity because it transforms our hearts. When we hold tightly to what we have, we're actually declaring that we trust our resources more than we trust God. But when we learn to give freely—especially when it doesn't make sense—we're declaring that God is our source.

We can't judge people's needs by their outward appearance. We're simply called to obey when God prompts us to give. Sometimes that means giving to people who seem like they don't need it. Sometimes it means giving amounts that feel uncomfortable. But obedience in giving positions us for receiving.

## The Holy Spirit: Your Guide to Breakthrough

Finally, God has given us the Holy Spirit—our Comforter, Teacher, and Guide. He resides in everyone who has been born again, but He can only be as active in your life as you allow Him to be.

There's an old principle: the dog you feed is the dog that grows strong. If you feed your flesh—your selfish desires, your old nature, your worldly appetites—that's what will dominate your life. But if you feed your spirit through prayer, worship, Scripture, and obedience, you'll grow into the person God created you to be.

## Your Breakthrough Is Coming

Here's what you need to understand today: your breakthrough is not just possible—it's promised. God wants to give it to you. He's not holding back because He's cruel or indifferent. He's waiting for you to position yourself through commitment and trust.

Whatever your breakthrough looks like—financial freedom, restored relationships, physical healing, career advancement, spiritual renewal, emotional wholeness—it's available. God sees your need. He knows your struggle. And He has already made provision.

Don't let this message slip away into the busyness of life. Don't read these words and then forget them by tomorrow. Instead, cultivate an attitude of expectancy. Start looking for your breakthrough. Start positioning yourself for it through commitment and trust.

But within them lies a depth of assurance that can transform how we face every challenge, every valley, and every shadow that crosses our path.

The Promise of Divine Protection

We are never alone. This isn't wishful thinking or positive psychology—it's the bedrock promise of Scripture. Angels have been assigned to watch over us day and night, keeping us from hurt, harm, and danger. Though we cannot see them with our physical eyes, they are present, active, and commissioned by the Almighty Himself.

The Apostle John reminds us that while the thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy, Jesus came that we might have life and have it more abundantly (John 10:10). This abundant life isn't defined by the absence of problems but by the presence of God in the midst of them.

Paul's rhetorical question in Romans 8:31 still echoes through the centuries: "If God be for us, who can be against us?" The prophet Elijah assured his fearful servant, "There are more on our side than on theirs" (2 Kings 6:16). And Moses declared to a terrified nation trapped between Pharaoh's army and the Red Sea, "The Lord will fight for you. Hold your peace" (Exodus 14:14).

We have everything we need. We simply need to believe it.

Through the Valley, Not In It

Psalm 23 has comforted believers for millennia, and its fourth verse contains a crucial word that changes everything: "Yea, though I walk **through** the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me."

Through. Not into. Not stuck in. Through.

The valley is not your destination—it's your passage. And there's a significant difference.

Right now, many find themselves in valleys of various kinds. Financial valleys. Health valleys. Relational valleys. Valleys of grief, confusion, or transition. The United States as a nation walks through its own valley, and the darkness can feel overwhelming.

But valleys are where we grow. They're not punishments; they're classrooms. In the valley, we learn to trust the Shepherd who knows the way through terrain we've never navigated before. In the valley, we discover that faith isn't the absence of difficulty but the presence of God in the midst of it.

When sheep enter a valley, they never know what dangers might lurk in the shadows—predators, treacherous paths, or sudden storms. But they follow the shepherd who has walked this way before, who knows every danger and every safe passage.

Whatever valley you're experiencing, God has promised to carry you through it. Not around it. Not over it. Through it. But there's a condition: you must trust Him. You must believe His promise without a shadow of doubt.

Walking, Not Running

Notice that the psalmist walks through the valley. There's no frantic running, no panic-stricken flight. When something terrifies us, our natural instinct is to run. But because of the Good Shepherd's presence, we can walk—steady, deliberate, unafraid.

This is the posture God desires for His children in turbulent times. While the world panics, believers can walk in peace. Not because we're ignorant of the dangers, but because we know who's in control.

The truth is simple but revolutionary: God is in charge, not man. Proverbs 21:1 tells us that a king's heart is like rivers of water in the hand of the Lord—He turns it wherever He wishes. Leaders may appear to be in control, making decrees and issuing orders, but they are merely instruments in the hand of the Almighty, accomplishing His purposes.

This doesn't mean we ignore what's happening in the world. It means we interpret it through the lens of God's sovereignty rather than through the lens of fear.

Fear Not, For I Am With You

"I will fear no evil, for you are with me." This is David's bold declaration, and it can be ours as well.

Fear and faith cannot occupy the same space. When fear dominates, faith retreats. When faith rises, fear must flee. God doesn't want His children operating out of fear but out of faith—trust in His character, His promises, and His presence.

The phrase "for you are with me" speaks of Jehovah Shammah—the Lord is there. No matter where you go, no matter what you face, the Lord is there. This promise echoes throughout Scripture:

- "Greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world" (1 John 4:4)
- "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you" (Isaiah 41:10)
- "I will never leave you nor forsake you" (Hebrews 13:5)
- "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28)
- "The Lord your God is with you wherever you go" (Joshua 1:9)

Think of a child who hears thunder in the night and sees shadows dancing on the wall. Terrified, the child runs to the parent's bedroom and climbs into bed. Once secure in the parent's presence, the child can rest peacefully. The thunder hasn't stopped. The shadows remain. But everything has changed because of whose presence surrounds them.

God invites us to respond the same way. Trust Him. Let Him hold you. You don't have to worry about anything—you're His child, and He's your Father.

The Rod and Staff: God's Comfort and Protection

David mentions two tools of the shepherd: "Your rod and your staff, they comfort me."

The rod was a heavy club used to defend the sheep against predators. The staff had a curved hook used to guide wandering sheep back to safety. Together, they represent God's protection and guidance.

When David faced Goliath, others saw an impossible giant. But David had already killed a lion and a bear with God's help. He knew God's protection was real, tested, and reliable. The rod and staff had already proven themselves in his life.

These instruments comfort us because they remind us that we have everything we need when we face the enemies of this life. God's protection surrounds us. His guidance directs us. His comfort sustains us.

Chosen for a Purpose

Perhaps the most humbling truth is this: "You did not choose me, I chose you" (John 15:16).

Out of all the people in the world, God chose us. He saw something in each of us that could make a difference in His work. This isn't a burden—it's an honor and a calling.

But it requires that we make Him first. Not second. Not when convenient. First.

The first commandment remains clear: "You shall have no other gods before me." Yet we live in a world of idols—money, status, appearance, careers, even our phones can become idols when they take God's rightful place in our lives.

When we put anything before God, He sometimes allows us to walk through valleys to realign our priorities, to strip away what distracts us, and to restore Him to His proper place.

Living in Light of Eternity

The return of Christ draws nearer with each passing day.

One day, we will enter the land of no more—no more pain, no more sickness, no more tears, no more death. We will live forever in the presence of God, in a new heaven and a new earth where the former things have passed away.

This eternal perspective changes everything. If God is for us, if He's already secured our future, if nothing can separate us from His love, then what can man do to us? Only what God allows, and nothing more.

The Bottom Line

God's got you. In the valley. Through the darkness. Against every enemy. Beyond every fear.

You may be coming out of a valley, entering a valley, or deep in the midst of one right now. But you are not alone, and you are not without hope.

The Good Shepherd walks with you. His rod protects you. His staff guides you. His presence comforts you. And His promise sustains you: "I will never leave you nor forsake you."

So when anxiety rises, when headlines scream, when circumstances overwhelm, speak this truth over your life: God's got me.

Believe it with all your heart. Walk by faith, not by sight. And watch as the Shepherd who loves you leads you safely through every valley, into the abundant life He promised.

God's got you. And that changes everything.

We all face moments when our faith is challenged, our peace is disrupted, and our hope seems to waver. These are the times when we feel stretched - pulled in different directions by circumstances beyond our control. But there's a profound truth we must remember: we can be stretched without being torn apart.

This concept is beautifully illustrated in the Bible, particularly in John 21:11. After a night of fruitless fishing, the disciples, at Jesus' instruction, cast their nets one more time. The result? A catch so abundant - 153 large fish - that it should have torn their nets. Yet, miraculously, "although there were so many, the net was not torn."

This net, withstanding the weight of an impossible catch, serves as a powerful metaphor for our lives. Like Peter, one of Jesus' closest disciples, we too experience stretching. Peter's journey was marked by moments of great faith intertwined with devastating failures. He boldly proclaimed his loyalty to Jesus, only to deny Him three times. He walked on water, then sank in doubt. Each instance stretched Peter's faith, his understanding, and his character.

But here's the crucial point: Peter was stretched, but not torn. Why? Because he remained connected - to Christ and to the community of believers.

In our own lives, we face similar stretching moments:

- When our prayers seem unanswered
- When we face unexpected losses
- When our plans crumble despite our best efforts
- When relationships strain under pressure
- When our faith is challenged by life's harsh realities

These are the times when we feel pulled to our limits. But like that miraculous net, we too can withstand the pressure without breaking apart. The key lies in two vital connections: our relationship with Christ and our bond with the church community.

Staying connected to Christ is paramount. It's not about questioning our salvation, but about maintaining an active, vibrant relationship with Him. Jesus intercedes for us, just as He did for Peter, saying, "I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail" (Luke 22:32). He offers words of peace, purpose, and promise, even in our most challenging moments.

Remember, Jesus Himself experienced the ultimate stretching on the cross. Betrayed, denied, and abandoned, He faced injustice and cruelty. Yet, He remained unbroken, demonstrating the power of love and forgiveness even in His final moments. His resurrection proves that stretching, even to the point of death, does not mean permanent defeat for those who trust in God.

Equally important is our connection to the church - the community of believers. We weren't designed to face life's challenges alone. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 reminds us, "Two are better than one... A cord of three strands is not quickly broken." In the church, we find multi-generational wisdom, shared experiences, and the strength that comes from unity in faith.

Think of the paralyzed man whose friends lowered him through a roof to reach Jesus (Mark 2). It was their collective faith that moved Jesus to heal. We too need faith-filled friends who will go to extraordinary lengths to help us in our times of need.

But how do we practically navigate through stretching seasons without being torn apart? Here are some key insights:

Embrace Community: Don't isolate yourself. Lean into your church family, share your struggles, and allow others to support you.

Stay Connected to Christ: Maintain your spiritual disciplines - prayer, Bible study, and worship. These are lifelines in turbulent times.

Remember God's Promises: Cling to the truths of Scripture. God promises never to leave or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5).

Serve Others: Paradoxically, helping others often helps us. It shifts our focus and reminds us of our purpose.

Practice Love: Even when stretched, choose love. As Jesus taught, love God and love your neighbor. This love releases tension and brings healing.

Keep Perspective: Like Peter post-resurrection, remember that your story isn't over. God can use your stretching for good.

Embrace Your Significance: No matter how stretched you feel, you matter to God. Your efforts, your work, your very existence is significant to Him.

Life will inevitably stretch us. We'll face moments that test our faith, challenge our convictions, and push us to our limits. But like that net full of fish, we can withstand the pressure without tearing apart. Our strength comes not from our own resilience, but from our connections - to Christ and to His church.

So the next time you feel stretched beyond what you think you can bear, remember: you are held by something stronger than any earthly net. You are held in the hands of a loving God, supported by a community of believers. You may be stretched, but you will not be torn.

Let this truth embolden you to face life's challenges with renewed courage. Allow it to deepen your faith and strengthen your relationships. And above all, let it remind you that no matter how stretched you feel, you are never beyond the reach of God's love and the support of His people.

In your stretching, may you find not breaking, but growth. Not tearing, but transformation. For it is often in these very moments of stretching that we discover the true depth of God's love and the incredible strength He has placed within us.

Dig Deeper

Download the Devotional and Study Guide

Take the Next Step

Will we serve Him wholeheartedly, or will we continue to waver between devotion and distraction? This decision is not just a one-time event, but a daily recommitment to follow the path God has set before us.

The story of Joshua and the Israelites provides a powerful illustration of this choice. After years of wandering in the wilderness and finally entering the Promised Land, Joshua gathered the people at Shechem. It was a time of celebration, but also a critical moment of rededication, recalibration, and rejuvenation.

Joshua reminded the people of their history – not just the recent victories, but the long journey that began with their ancestors. He recounted how God called Abraham from a land of idol worship, led him to Canaan, and fulfilled His promise of descendants through Isaac and Jacob. He reminded them of their time in Egypt, both the descent into slavery and the miraculous deliverance through Moses.

This recounting of history wasn't just a history lesson. It was a reminder of God's faithfulness through generations, even when His people were unfaithful. It was a call to recognize that their current blessings were not of their own making, but the result of God's grace and power.

As we reflect on our own lives, we too should take time to remember God's faithfulness. How has He provided for us, protected us, and guided us, even when we didn't recognize His hand at work? How many times has He turned what was meant to curse us into a blessing?

Joshua's challenge to the people resonates with us today: "Choose this day whom you will serve." It's a call to make a deliberate, conscious decision to follow God. But it's not just about making a choice – it's about living out that choice every day.

This choice requires us to "put away the foreign gods" that may be lurking in our lives. These might not be literal idols, but anything that competes for our devotion and trust. It could be our reliance on our own strength, our pursuit of worldly success, or our attachment to comfort and ease. Choosing to serve God means identifying these "idols" and deliberately setting them aside.

The people responded enthusiastically to Joshua's challenge, declaring, "We will serve the Lord!" But Joshua pressed them further, warning them of the seriousness of this commitment. Serving God is not a casual decision or an emotional response – it's a lifelong commitment that will be tested.

This commitment is not just individual, but communal. Joshua gathered all the tribes, including the elders, leaders, judges, and officers. In our own lives, we need to surround ourselves with fellow believers who will encourage us, challenge us, and stand with us in our commitment to God.

The story reminds us that our journey with God is not always smooth. The Israelites faced battles as they entered the Promised Land. Similarly, when we choose to follow God wholeheartedly, we may face opposition – sometimes from unexpected sources. But we can take comfort in knowing that God goes before us, fights for us, and gives us victory.

Moreover, God often works in ways we don't expect. Just as He turned Balaam's intended curse into a blessing for Israel, He can take what others mean for harm and use it for our good and His glory. This requires us to trust in His sovereignty and goodness, even when circumstances seem unfavorable.

As we navigate life's challenges, we must remember that our strength doesn't come from our own abilities or resources. God reminded the Israelites that it wasn't their swords or bows that brought victory, but His power. Similarly, our success and blessings come not from our own efforts, but from God's grace.

This truth should humble us and increase our gratitude. How often do we take credit for our achievements, forgetting that every good gift comes from above? The land, cities, and prosperity the Israelites enjoyed were not earned, but given by God. In the same way, we should recognize and be thankful for the unearned blessings in our lives.

Choosing to serve God is not a burden, but a privilege. It's an opportunity to align ourselves with the Creator of the universe, to experience His love, guidance, and provision. It's a chance to be part of something greater than ourselves, to live with purpose and eternal significance.

But this choice must be renewed daily. It's easy to declare our commitment in a moment of spiritual high, but the real test comes in the mundane moments of everyday life. Will we choose to serve God when it's inconvenient, when it goes against cultural norms, or when it requires sacrifice?

As we make this choice, we can draw strength from the promises of God. He assures us of His presence, His protection, and His power. Psalm 27 reminds us that even when enemies encamp against us, we can be confident in God's faithfulness. He will hide us in His shelter and set us high upon a rock.

In conclusion, the call to choose whom we will serve is as relevant today as it was in Joshua's time. It's a call to examine our hearts, to identify and remove any idols, and to commit ourselves fully to God. It's a call to remember His faithfulness in the past and trust Him for the future. It's a call to live with purpose, integrity, and devotion.

As we navigate life's journey, may we echo Joshua's declaration: "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." May we make this choice not just once, but every day, in every circumstance. And may we experience the joy, peace, and fulfillment that comes from wholehearted devotion to our faithful God.

Dig Deeper

Download the Devotional and Study Guide

Take the Next Step

It's become a popular way to acknowledge life's challenges, both big and small. But for those walking a spiritual path, this struggle takes on a deeper, more profound meaning. It's not just about dealing with daily inconveniences or setbacks; it's about the internal battle we face as we strive to live according to our faith.

Imagine this scenario: You're walking through your day, and suddenly you find a $20 bill on the ground. What's your first instinct? Do you pocket it, thinking of it as a lucky windfall? Do you look around for the owner? Or do you consider donating it? This simple situation illustrates the kind of moral dilemmas we face regularly, where our actions reveal the ongoing struggle between our spiritual ideals and our human nature.

The apostle Paul, one of the most influential figures in Christian history, wasn't shy about admitting his own struggles. In his letter to the Romans, he confesses, "For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing" (Romans 7:19). This raw honesty from a spiritual giant is both comforting and challenging. It reminds us that even the most devout among us grapple with inner conflicts.

But why is this struggle so real, so persistent? The answer lies in understanding the nature of our existence. We are spiritual beings housed in physical bodies, and this duality creates tension. Our spirits may yearn for righteousness, but our flesh—our human nature—pulls us toward selfish desires and actions that don't align with our higher values.

This struggle isn't a sign of failure; it's an inherent part of our journey. Recognizing this can be liberating. It means we're not alone in our challenges, and it opens the door to finding real solutions.

So how do we navigate this internal battlefield? The key lies in tapping into the right source of strength. Trying to overcome our struggles through sheer willpower or positive thinking often leads to frustration and defeat. Instead, we need to recognize that true victory comes through spiritual means.

For Christians, this means relying on the Holy Spirit. It's about acknowledging that we can't win this battle on our own, but we have a divine helper. As Galatians 5:16 states, "Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh." This isn't just about resisting temptation; it's about actively aligning ourselves with God's will and allowing His Spirit to guide our thoughts, words, and actions.

But what does "walking by the Spirit" look like in practical terms? It involves:

1. Regular prayer and meditation on spiritual truths
2. Studying and applying scripture to our daily lives
3. Cultivating a mindset of surrender and dependence on God
4. Seeking wisdom and accountability from a community of faith

When we commit to these practices, we begin to see a transformation. The fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control—starts to manifest in our lives. These qualities don't emerge through our own efforts but as a result of allowing God's Spirit to work within us.

It's crucial to understand that this struggle isn't about achieving perfection. We'll never reach a point in this life where we're completely free from temptation or the pull of our human nature. The goal is growth, not flawlessness. Each time we choose to align with the Spirit rather than giving in to our flesh, we're strengthening our spiritual muscles and becoming more like Christ.

This perspective shift is vital. Instead of beating ourselves up over our failures or becoming discouraged by the persistent nature of our struggles, we can view each challenge as an opportunity for growth and deepening our reliance on God.

Moreover, our struggles serve a purpose beyond our personal growth. They cultivate empathy and compassion for others who are also fighting their own battles. They remind us of our need for grace—both receiving it from God and extending it to others. And they keep us humble, preventing us from falling into self-righteousness or spiritual pride.

As we navigate this journey, it's essential to guard against misconceptions that can hinder our progress. One common pitfall is believing that certain political ideologies or social systems are the root of all evil. While these can certainly contribute to societal problems, the core issue is always sin—the fundamental brokenness that affects every human heart. By focusing on addressing sin and its effects, rather than getting caught up in partisan battles, we can make real progress in our personal lives and in positively impacting the world around us.

Another trap to avoid is the belief that once we become spiritually mature, we'll no longer face struggles. This idea sets us up for disappointment and can lead to feelings of failure when we inevitably face challenges. Instead, we should embrace the reality that struggle is a normal part of the spiritual life. It's not the absence of struggle that defines our spiritual health, but how we respond to it.

As we conclude, let's remember that while the struggle is indeed real, so is the possibility of victory. This victory doesn't always look like completely overcoming a temptation or never facing a particular challenge again. Often, it's about making incremental progress, learning to lean more heavily on God's strength, and finding peace in the midst of our battles.

The words of the apostle Paul offer both comfort and inspiration: "Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!" (Romans 7:25). This exclamation of gratitude reminds us that we're not fighting alone. We have a divine ally who not only understands our struggles but has already secured the ultimate victory on our behalf.

So the next time you find yourself in the midst of an internal battle, remember: the struggle is real, but so is the power available to you through faith. Embrace the journey, rely on the Spirit, and take heart in knowing that each step forward, no matter how small, is a victory worth celebrating.

Dig Deeper

Take the Next Step

It's temporary, often distorting the truth and leading us astray. We see this played out in a humorous story about an elderly man in the hospital. As he recounts to his wife of 55 years all the difficult times she stood by him, he concludes, "Ethel, you're bad luck!" This comical misinterpretation highlights how our limited perspective can cause us to draw incorrect conclusions.

In contrast, God's perspective is unlimited, clear, and eternal. Psalm 19:8 reminds us, "The commandments of the Lord are right, bringing joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are clear, giving insight for living." When we align our vision with God's, we gain access to His infinite wisdom and resources.

The Power of Divine Perspective

Consider the story of David and Goliath. While the Israelite soldiers saw an unbeatable giant, David saw an opportunity for God to display His power. It wasn't that David had better eyesight - he had a different perspective, one rooted in faith and trust in God's capabilities.

This shift in viewpoint is available to all believers. We have the Holy Spirit dwelling within us, ready to guide us towards God's perspective. However, we often default to our familiar, fleshly reactions instead of tapping into this divine resource. Romans 8:8 reminds us that "the flesh has no desire to please God." To truly see life through God's eyes, we must intentionally cultivate our relationship with Him and learn to listen to the Spirit's guidance.

Lazarus: A Lesson in Divine Timing

The story of Lazarus beautifully illustrates the importance of trusting God's perspective over our own. When Jesus heard that Lazarus was ill, He deliberately waited days before going to him. By human standards, this delay seemed cruel or negligent. But Jesus had a greater purpose in mind - He wanted to demonstrate God's power over death itself.

This account introduces us to three groups with different perspectives:

1. The disciples, whose faith was weak despite witnessing numerous miracles.
2. Martha and Mary, who believed in the future resurrection but didn't grasp that the Resurrection and the Life stood before them.
3. The Jewish spectators, who thought Jesus could have prevented Lazarus' death if He'd arrived earlier.

Each group's limited perspective prevented them from seeing the full picture of what God was about to do. This teaches us an important lesson: Sometimes God doesn't respond to our situation immediately because He's waiting for the perfect moment to display His glory.

Three Reasons to Trust God's Perspective

1. Obey God's Voice, Even When It Doesn't Make Sense

When Jesus commanded the stone to be rolled away from Lazarus' tomb, Martha protested, citing the stench of a four-day-old corpse. But Jesus insisted. This moment challenged Martha's faith - would she trust what she knew about death, or would she obey Jesus' seemingly illogical command?

God often asks us to do things that don't align with our human reasoning. But faith means obeying God's voice, even when we don't understand. As Psalm 119:11 says, "I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you." When we internalize God's word, we're better equipped to recognize and follow His voice. After all, God's commands are from His perspective which is higher than ours (Isaiah 55:8) and results in good (Romans 8:28).

2. Believe God's Promises to See His Glory

Jesus told Martha, "Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?" (John 11:40). Belief precedes the miracle. When we choose to trust God's promises, even in the face of seemingly impossible circumstances, we position ourselves to witness His glory.

God allows challenging situations in our lives to strengthen our faith. Each trial is an opportunity to believe Him more deeply. As we learn to trust God through difficulties, our faith grows, and we become living testimonies of His faithfulness.

3. Our Faith Journey Impacts Others

The resurrection of Lazarus wasn't just for the benefit of his family. John 11:45 tells us, "Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, believed in him." Our faith journey has a ripple effect, influencing those around us.

We are called to be "billboards" for Christ, displaying His message through our lives. When people observe how we handle trials with faith and grace, it can draw them to Jesus. Our consistent witness - the same "message" displayed every day of the week - can be a powerful testimony to the reality of God's transforming power.

Embracing God's Perspective

Shifting from our limited human perspective to God's divine viewpoint isn't always easy, but it's essential for spiritual growth. Here are some practical steps to help cultivate this mindset:

1. Spend time in God's Word daily, allowing it to reshape your thinking.
2. Practice listening to God in prayer, giving God space to speak into your situations.
3. Surround yourself with other believers who can encourage your faith.
4. Look for God's hand at work in challenging circumstances, trusting that He's working for your good (Romans 8:28).
5. Choose to believe God's promises, even when your emotions or circumstances suggest otherwise.

Remember, God's purpose is more important than our temporary pain. He is constantly working to fulfill His purpose in our lives, with or without our cooperation. By choosing to align our perspective with His, we open ourselves up to experience His power, witness His glory, and become effective ambassadors for His kingdom.

As you face life's challenges, big and small, pause to consider: Are you viewing this situation through human eyes or God's eyes? Don't go with what it looks like on the surface. Instead, trust that God is working behind the scenes, and it's not over until He says it's over. Your willingness to see life through His perspective might just be the key to unlocking the miracle you've been waiting for.

Go Deeper ...

5-day Devotional Guide

Study Guide

Whether in our personal lives, families, or communities, it can feel like every step forward is met with two steps back. But what if these challenges are not meant to stop us, but to strengthen us?

The story of Nehemiah rebuilds the walls of Jerusalem offers profound insights into persevering through opposition. Nehemiah, a cupbearer to the king, received news that his homeland was in distress, with its walls torn down and its people struggling. Moved by compassion, he sought and received favor from the king to return and rebuild.

However, Nehemiah's mission was not without its critics. As soon as he arrived, he faced opposition from local governors who were "displeased that someone had come to seek the welfare of the Israelites." This reaction may seem puzzling – why would anyone be upset about someone wanting to help? Yet it reveals a truth about human nature: not everyone will celebrate your calling or support your mission.

Nehemiah's response to this opposition provides a powerful lesson. He declared, "The God of heaven will give us success. We his servants will start rebuilding, but as for you, you have no share in Jerusalem or any claim or historic right to it." This bold statement reminds us of two crucial truths:

1. Our success ultimately comes from God, not human approval.
2. We must be clear about our purpose and not let others derail us from it.

As the work began, the opposition intensified. Nehemiah and his team faced ridicule, threats, and attempts to create disturbances. Yet through it all, Nehemiah's strategy remained consistent: pray and plan. He turned to God in prayer, seeking divine protection and guidance. Simultaneously, he took practical steps to defend the work, arming the builders so they could work with "one hand and hold a weapon in the other."

This balanced approach of faith and action serves as a model for us today. We're called to trust God completely while also using the wisdom and resources He's given us. It's not either/or, but both/and.

The opposition didn't stop at external threats. Nehemiah also faced internal challenges, including an attempt to lure him into sin under the guise of protection. This reminds us to stay spiritually vigilant, discerning between good advice and godly advice. Not everything that seems helpful aligns with God's will for our lives.

Perhaps one of the most poignant moments in Nehemiah's story is his response to those who tried to distract him with meetings and discussions. His reply was simple yet profound: "I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and go down to you?"

In our hyper-connected world, this message resonates deeply. How often do we let less important matters distract us from the essential work God has called us to do? Nehemiah's focus challenges us to prioritize what truly matters and not get sidetracked by every invitation or debate that comes our way.

The narrative of Nehemiah reminds us that opposition often comes in waves. Just when one challenge is overcome, another arises. Yet the work continued, and remarkably, the walls were rebuilt in just 52 days. This rapid progress stands as a testament to what can be accomplished when a community unites around a God-given vision, refusing to be deterred by obstacles.

While Nehemiah's story is set in ancient times, its lessons are timeless. Today, we might not be rebuilding physical walls, but we are all called to build something – whether it's our faith, our families, our communities, or our character. And in all these areas, we can expect to face opposition.

The message is clear: Don't stop the work. The work of sharing the gospel, making disciples, and living out our faith in tangible ways is too important to be halted by criticism, threats, or distractions. We're reminded that "we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us" (Philippians 4:13).

Moreover, we're encouraged by the promise that the work God has begun in us, He will carry on to completion (Philippians 1:6). This assurance doesn't mean the path will be easy, but it does mean that ultimate success is guaranteed if we remain faithful.

In closing, let's reflect on the words of Jesus, who faced the ultimate opposition yet triumphed over it. Even when it seemed the work had been stopped – as Jesus hung on the cross and was laid in the tomb – Sunday morning revealed that the work of salvation could not be thwarted. Jesus is still alive, still empowering us, still walking with us.

So, whatever you're building, whatever opposition you're facing, remember: the work can't be stopped if it's aligned with God's purposes. Your perseverance matters. Your faithfulness counts. Don't give up, don't back down, and don't stop the work. For in due season, you will reap if you do not grow weary (Galatians 6:9).

Let this be an encouragement to press on, to keep building, to keep serving, and to keep loving – even when it's hard, even when you face ridicule or threats, even when it seems like progress is slow. The God who rebuilt Jerusalem's walls through Nehemiah is the same God who is working through you today. Trust in His provision, lean on His strength, and don't stop the work He's called you to do. The breakthrough might be just around the corner.

Go Deeper ...

5-day Devotional Guide

Study Guide

This isn't just any touch, but one that comes from a source of infinite love and compassion: Jesus Christ.

Imagine a scene from ancient times - a man afflicted with leprosy, a disease that not only ravaged the body but also severed social ties. In those days, lepers were outcasts, forced to live outside society, crying "Unclean!" to warn others of their approach. Yet in a moment of desperation and faith, one such man broke all social conventions to approach Jesus.

"Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean," the leper said, bowing before Jesus. These words speak volumes about the man's faith and his understanding of who Jesus was. He recognized Jesus' authority and power, even without having witnessed previous miracles. This was, after all, Jesus' first recorded healing.

Jesus' response? "I am willing. Be cleansed." And with those words, accompanied by a touch, the impossible became possible. The leprosy vanished instantly.

This story, found in Matthew 8:1-4, Mark 1, and Luke's gospel, reveals profound truths about the nature of Jesus and the transformative power of His touch:

1. Jesus is Willing

How often do we hesitate to approach God, feeling unworthy or afraid? Yet Jesus' willingness to touch and heal the leper demonstrates His desire to connect with us, regardless of our condition. He doesn't recoil from our mess; He reaches into it.

1 Peter 5:7 encourages us to cast all our anxieties on Him because He cares for us. This care isn't reluctant or begrudging - it's His very nature. Jesus wants to be involved in our lives, to touch our hurts, and to bring healing.

2. Jesus is Compassionate

Mark's account tells us that before touching the leper, Jesus was "moved with compassion." This wasn't a clinical healing; it was an act of deep empathy. Hebrews 4:15 reminds us that we don't have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses. Jesus understands human suffering intimately.

When we hurt, He hurts. When we grieve, He grieves. His compassion moves Him to action, reaching out to touch even those society deems untouchable.

3. Jesus Has Authority

The leper recognized something special in Jesus - an authority beyond that of priests or doctors. By touching the leper, Jesus demonstrated power over disease and even over the law itself. Where others saw only contamination, Jesus brought purification.

This authority extends to every area of our lives. Whatever report we've received - from doctors, from society, from our own negative self-talk - Jesus has the power to override it with His touch.

4. Jesus Restores to Community

Interestingly, after healing the leper, Jesus instructed him to show himself to the priests and offer the sacrifices Moses commanded. This wasn't just about physical healing; it was about restoration to community. Jesus wanted the man to be officially declared clean so he could rejoin society and worship with his people.

This speaks to the holistic nature of Jesus' touch. He doesn't just heal our bodies or souls in isolation; He wants to restore us to full participation in life and community. The church, as the body of Christ on earth, is meant to continue this ministry of touch - reaching out with compassion, offering healing, and welcoming people back into fellowship.

5. Jesus Works on His Timeline

Jesus often told those He healed not to spread the news widely. This wasn't about keeping secrets, but about staying on a divine schedule. Prophecies in the book of Daniel spoke of specific timelines for the Messiah's work, and Jesus was careful to fulfill these exactly.

This reminds us that God's touch in our lives often comes according to His perfect timing, not our impatient demands. Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages us to trust in the Lord and not lean on our own understanding. His schedule is perfect, even when we can't comprehend it.

The Transformative Touch

The story of the leper's healing invites us to consider: What areas of our lives need Jesus' touch? Where do we feel "unclean," isolated, or in need of restoration? Perhaps it's a physical ailment, an emotional wound, or a spiritual struggle. Maybe it's a relationship that needs mending or a dream that needs reviving.

Whatever it is, we can approach Jesus with the same faith as the leper: "Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean." And we can trust in His compassionate response: "I am willing."

This touch that makes all the difference isn't limited to ancient stories. It's available today, often working through the community of believers - the church. As we receive His touch, we're also called to be His hands in the world, offering that same compassion and healing to others.

Reflection and Action

Take a moment to reflect:

1. Where in your life do you need Jesus' healing touch?
2. How can you position yourself, like the leper, to receive that touch?
3. Who in your life might need you to be the conduit of Jesus' compassionate touch?

Remember, the God we serve is willing, compassionate, and powerful. He sees you, He cares deeply, and He has the authority to bring transformation. Don't let feelings of unworthiness keep you from approaching Him. Like the leper, come with faith, believing that His touch can make all the difference.

And as you experience His touch, be prepared to share it with others. In a world starved for genuine connection and healing, we have the privilege of being Christ's hands and feet, offering a touch that truly matters - a touch that comes from the ultimate source of love and compassion.

Go Deeper ...

5-day Devotional Guide

Study Guide

Giving up food is an outward action for an inward commitment. Fasting for God requires sacrifice and discipline.

Fasting can also help remove obstacles that so easily get in the way of fully focusing on Him. Removing the food or WHATEVER the Lord impresses upon your heart to give up within the specified time frame will help free your mind, so you can meditate on God.

Remember ...

In order to be effective, you must also pray during that time. Praying to God and fasting is a powerful weapon against adversity.

Jesus Christ said in Matthew 6:16-18, “Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of sad countenance; for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward.” “But, thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; That thou, appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly" (KJV).
